Traits of Personality in Vedic perspective

Every individual in the world has his unique mental and physical personality traits. The personality of a person comprising of one’s physical appearance, one’s intelligence and power of understanding and /or expressing oneself can be judged from his horoscope with the help of some fundamental rules of astrology. On knowing one’s potentials and future prospects, one can improve his capabilities and can achieve maximum success in life.
The personality as a whole is analyzed with the help of ascendant, its lord, planets associated with them and the other planets signifying various personality traits depending upon their strength.
The rising sign of Zodiac on the eastern horizon at the time of birth is called the Ascendant of the horoscope. It rules the personality, disposition, tendencies and worldly outlook of the native. Broadly speaking, if the Ascendant or the lord of ascendant belongs to or associated with benefic planets, the native is virtuous, good looking and with bright future. This is not so if malefic planets influence the ascendant or its lord unless they are the lords of the Ascendant.

Planets and General Traits

The different planets influencing the ascendant give different personality traits. The sun rules the qualities of administration and leadership; The Moon rules the qualities of understanding, hospitatality and imagination; Mars rules the qualities of controlling through physical and rational power; Mercury rules the qualities of discremation, confidence and analysis; Jupiter rules the qualities of benevolence, kindness, sincerity, morality and generosity; Venus rules the qualities of etiquette, understandable disposition, club- ability, team spirit and benevolence; Saturn rules the traits of selfishness, insecurity, saving, miserliness and antipathy for morality in his pursuits; Rahu has the qualities of being manipulative and the Ketu has the charaerstics of causing miseries and turns one towards spirituality.

Planets and Physical Influence

The planets influencing the Ascendant give different physical personality traits covering stature, complexion, built and disposition. The Sun gives a square body, majestic appearance, powerful speech, scanty hair, honey colored eyes, wheatish complexion and makes a person courageous and bestows administrative capabilities. The Moon gives fair complexion, pleasant speech, caring and easy-going attitude. Mars gives a short structure and stout body, red eyes, thin waist and reddish complexion. Mercury gives attractive features, well proportioned body, large eyes, wit and fair complexion. Jupiter gives golden complexion, impressive and magnificent disposition, thin brown hair and large body when it is strong in the horoscope Venus gives a charming appearance, sharp and beautiful features, and beautiful large eyes, dark bright and curly hair. Saturn gives an emaciated body, long structure, brown and sunken eyes, big teeth, dark complexion, prominent veins, wrinkles, long hands and face. When Saturn is weak, it gives lazy and melancholy nature, course and excessive hair.

The Signs of the Zodiac and their influence

Every sign of the Zodiac in Ascendant has its unique mental, physical and personal characteristics. These characteristics are to be blended with the effect of the planets occupied by the ascendant or aspecting the ascendant. If there is no planet in the ascendant, the physical and mental characteristics of the native will be according to the sign. The signs of the Zodiac can be categorized in two ways: (a) according to the element, viz.firey, earthy, airy and watery and (b) according to movability, viz. movable, fixed and dual signs

Effect of elements:

1. Fiery sign (1st, 5th, 9th sign) - Fiery sign denotes energy and stamina. If the ascendant is a fiery sign, the native is bold, hard working and brave. He can do hard work with ease and without taking rest. He has the capability of overcoming the adverse circumstances. He is ambitious, full of confidence and enterprising.

2. Earthy signs (2nd, 6th, 10th sign) - The native is always cautious and attentive towards achieving his cherished goal. Stability, patience, tolerance and concentration are his main characteristics. The native is somewhat stubborn, lazy and slow in working. He has a great sense of responsibility.

3. Airy signs (3rd, 7th, 11th signs) - Such native is art-loving by nature. Affection, politeness, sympathy and helping attitude are his characteristics. He is generally well behaved and intelligent. He is curious to know new things.

4. Watery signs (4th, 8th, 12th signs) - If watery sign is in the ascendant, the native is generally sensitive, emotional and easily influenced by others. He is creative, intuitive and an original thinker. He may be indecisive, nervous, confused and vague.

Effect of Nature of sign

1. Movable signs (1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th)-such sign in the Ascendant makes the native active, hardworking, enterprising, active and ambitious. Eager to achieve his goal, he does not care the sentiments of others. He does not like obstacles or delay. He has the quality of leadership. He is freedom loving, independent, energetic and full of confidence.

2. Fixed signs (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th signs) - If fixed signs are in the ascendant, the native is determined, patient, dedicated, trustworthy and reliable. He is traditional, lazy and stubborn. He has a sense of responsibility and is skilled in his working.

3. Dual signs (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th)-If there is dual sign in the Ascendant, the native has flexibility in nature. He is neither impatient like those having movable sign, nor he is rigid like the fixed signs. He is sensitive, emotional and sympathetic. He honors the sentiments of others.
